What Is Digital Eye Strain

Digital eye strain is an eye condition that can occur when you spend a lot of time looking at a digital screen. Symptoms include redness, irritation, wateriness, and general eye discomfort.

Eye strain is a common issue many people can face after working on a visually demanding task. However, digital eye strain has some unique factors that can contribute to symptoms, like:

  • Screen brightness
  • Glare from lights
  • Room lighting
  • Desk ergonomics and posture

Common Relief Strategies

Before we can recommend any treatments, we always recommend an eye exam. Eye exams give us a clear understanding of your vision and eye health needs so we can determine if you have other issues contributing to your digital eye strain symptoms.

Some of these issues can include uncorrected refractive errors like nearsightedness or farsightedness, but dry eye syndrome can also lead to eye discomfort.

There are strategies for managing digital eye strain at home or at work, and they’re especially useful if you need some quick relief from long hours in front of a screen.

Eye Drops

Eye drops can help provide some fast-acting relief from uncomfortable eye strain. However, we recommend speaking with our team before purchasing any over-the-counter products.

Changing aspects of your work habits or environment can have a tremendous effect on your eye comfort. If you’re struggling with eye strain, you can try:

  • Turning your screen away from light to reduce glare.
  • Adjusting your screen brightness to match the room.
  • Taking regular breaks.
  • Adjusting the way you sit at your desk.
  • Changing your screen height and distance.

The 20-20-20 rule is an exercise you can perform whenever you begin to develop eye strain symptoms.

Every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to look at something about 20 feet away. Doing this gives your eyes an opportunity to blink, readjust, and get back to work.
