What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a systemic health problem that affects how your body produces and uses insulin, a hormone that controls your blood sugar.

Your blood cells use sugar, also known as glucose, to provide you energy. And insulin acts as the key that allows sugar to enter your blood cells. Diabetes can affect this process and cause your blood sugar levels to rise, increasing the risk of several diseases that affect your heart, gums, and your eyes.If you have diabetes, you may experience bouts of extreme thirst and hunger, fatigue, weight loss, and even blurred vision.

Preserving Your Eye Health

High blood sugar can increase the risk of several different eye diseases and conditions. If you have diabetes, we recommend having annual eye exams so we can respond to any changes to your eye health.

It’s essential for us to understand your retinal health, which is why we’re proud to use Optos retinal imaging. This non-invasive, innovative technology gives us an ultra-wide view of your retina, helping us look for eye diseases diabetes may cause.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease directly caused by diabetes.

Diabetic retinopathy can develop slowly and may not present noticeable symptoms in its early stages. The disease occurs when high blood sugar damages blood vessels inside your retina, causing them to bulge, break, and leak fluid. Over time, the leaking fluids could lead to vision loss.

Advanced cases of diabetic retinopathy could cause your retina to develop abnormal blood vessels to compensate for the fluid loss. However, these new blood vessels can also break or create scar tissue, increasing the risk of retinal detachment.

Diabetic macular edema occurs as a result of diabetic retinopathy but affects a part of the eye called the macula.

Your macula provides you with the central vision you use to read and recognize sharp details. As fluids leak from your retina’s blood vessels, it can cause the macula to swell and lead to possible blurry central vision and vision loss.

There are several different types of glaucoma, but diabetes can nearly double your risk of developing open-angle glaucoma.

Open-angle glaucoma is an eye disease that affects your optic nerve over time. Your optic nerve is responsible for sending the information your retina collects to your brain. Open-angle glaucoma can increase your eye’s internal pressure, damaging the optic nerve and leading to vision loss.

Cataracts are a common eye condition many of us develop as we age, but diabetes could increase the risk of developing them earlier in life.

Cataracts occur when your eye’s clear crystalline lens becomes rigid. As it stiffens, it can develop a milky, hazy colour that could affect your vision.
